Abstract: This research, within the scope of a doctorate, aims to study and problematize the material culture built in the colonial period in Mata Sul de Pernambuco, between 1594 and 1780. With this purpose, we seek to understand the variety of architectural elements implemented there and resulting from a continuous accumulation of sociocultural, economic and architectural factors constituted in the colonial period in the region. In this analysis we discuss the interconnection between material culture, the colonial sugar society forged from the occupation of the Mata Sul territory of Pernambuco and the relations of power and domination resulting from this process. The integrated use of research into the spaces where those buildings were built, the interpretation of written sources, the environmental aspects of the region and the historical and social context in which such historical phenomena occurred were relevant to the completion of this work. Therefore, we understand that, as it is a work that moves in the field of New Cultural History, we used theoretical and methodological guidelines that favored the use of different types of documentary sources. Furthermore, we use approaches and discussions from other areas of knowledge, such as Geography, Architecture, Sociology, Archeology, Psychoanalysis and, above all, History. In this way, we sought to debate, throughout this trajectory, proposals presented by different authors, which
served as a contribution to the process of epistemological construction of this work. As the research progressed, we were able to understand how the colonial company, the dominant groups and their institutions strategically used architectural parties, typical of the period, to spread, replicate and legitimize the relations of power, command and domination that favored them over society as a whole, whether in rural areas or colonial villages. Thus, we understand that the layout and implementation of a colonial urban nucleus, big house, chapel, slave quarters, convents or chamber house and jail followed a political, economic and cultural logic that sought to symbolically materialize the various social hierarchies that were circumscribed in the colonial sugar world.

Abstract: This dissertation analyzes representations of the Abolition of Slavery and the Post-Abolition period in the state of Ceará, as presented in Regional History textbooks intended for 4th- and 5th-grade elementary school students, published between 2008 and 2016. The study seeks to understand how the historical event of Abolition—one of the most celebrated themes in collective memory and local historiography—is portrayed within didactic historiography. It is based on the hypothesis that, despite significant historiographical shifts and advances in educational legislation—such as Laws No. 10,639/2003 and 11,645/2008, which made the teaching of Afro-Brazilian history and culture mandatory in basic education—and the influence of the movement known as the “new history of Ceará” (Souza, 2015), textbooks continue to sustain a traditional, romanticized, and heroic narrative of the acclaimed “Cearense pioneering spirit.” As a result, they fail to offer a more in-depth analysis of the lived experiences of enslaved individuals and the complexities of the post-abolition period. The research corpus consists of five Ceará history textbooks published between 2008 and 2016, most of which were evaluated and approved by Brazil’s National Textbook Program (PNLD, 2008; 2013). Content analysis, as formulated by Laurence Bardin (2016), is employed to examine textual representations of events and historical actors that shape the didactic narratives, as well as the pedagogical activities proposed. The study is initially grounded in the reflections of Alain Choppin (2004) and Circe Bittencourt (2018a), who conceive textbooks as cultural objects that disseminate specific values; in Ana Zavala’s (2014) discussions on the transformation of historiographical texts into didactic content and the connections between academic and school historiography; and in Roger Chartier’s (2002a; 2002b) concept of “representation,” which serves as an analytical framework for examining how narratives surrounding abolition and post-abolition are constructed and endowed with meaning in the analyzed textbooks. The findings indicate that the didactic historiography under examination incorporates more critical reflections on the process of abolition, including productive dialogue with more recent legislation. However, it still lacks analytical depth, particularly with regard to the treatment of enslaved individuals and their descendants as historical subjects (Trouillot, 2016). Ultimately, this dissertation aims to contribute to the development of an antiracist historical education in Brazil by challenging monocultural and Eurocentric curricula and promoting empathy and tolerance through critical analysis of how the history of slavery and its abolition is represented in textbooks.

Abstract: In this dissertation, we propose to understand, through the Natural Science Museum of the
Dois Irmãos State Park (MCNPEDI), the idea of nature historically and culturally produced by
the institution, grounded in the analysis of the museum's collection. Thus, this research also
investigates the representation of nature through "musealized" nature. Additionally, through
the collection of sources, this study examines the trajectory of the institution. As a theoretical
framework, we draw on the works of Mutschler (2008), Worster (1988), Pádua (2010), Souza
(2019), Passmore (1995), Daston and Galison (2007) to understand what nature is and how
it can be represented. We also address the relationship between the museum and the State
from the perspective of Bourdieu (2014), Menezes (2002), and Bennett (1995). The concept
of musealization is approached through Brulon (2019), Desvallées and Mairesse (2013), and
musealization in the context of natural science museums with Landim and Soler (2017). We
also discuss the concept of representation based on Chartier (1990). From a methodological
point of view, this is a documentary, exploratory, and descriptive research with a qualitative
approach, using inference, description, and interpretation procedures of the data collected
through primary and oral sources. The investigation's findings confirmed that MCNPEDI went
through three phases, each addressing the idea of nature in completely different ways. The
first phase is characterized by a more self-taught narrative of nature, while the second phase
adopts a more technical and scientific conception and representation of nature. In the last
phase, the dismantling of the collection was observed. Finally, the investigation concludes
that the relationship between the museum and the State is crucial for the survival of any
institution, as the trajectory of MCNPEDI highlights the pursuit of this legitimization, and its
absence ultimately led to the loss of its invaluable collection.

Abstract: Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder mainly characterized by impaired communication,
social, and cognitive development. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a lipophilic cannabinoid, which has
pharmacological effects on the central nervous system that can bring benefits to autistic
individuals since there is no standard drug treatment available. Nanoemulsions are delivery
systems that increase the water solubility and bioavailability of lipophilic compounds such as
cannabidiol. This study proposed the formulation of a corn oil nanoemulsion rich in
cannabidiol, as well as evaluating the effect of this nanoemulsion on behavioral changes and
testicular parameters in an animal model of autism induced by valproic acid (VPA).
Nanoemulsions were developed with CBD oil at different concentrations (5, 10, and 20%) and
the macroscopic and physicochemical characteristics were evaluated. The formulations were
stable after thermal stress and centrifugation, and showed a droplet size smaller than 200 nm, in addition to a reduced polydispersity index and zeta potential, characterizing their
homogeneity. For the induction of autism, 10 female rats received 500 mg/kg of VPA diluted
in saline solution or saline solution alone intraperitoneally during the prenatal period. Males
born from females exposed to VPA constituted the VPA group (positive control), CBDON1
(treated with 10% oil nanoemulsion), and CBDON2 (treated with 10% oil nanoemulsion).
Males born from females exposed to saline solution constituted the control group (negative).
Five behavioral tests were performed in which anxiety, locomotor and exploratory activity,
stereotypes, sociability index, and social preference index were evaluated. Animals exposed to VPA during the prenatal period showed an increase in anxiety and stereotypes, and a reduction in exploratory activity, sociability index and social preference index, behavioral alterations compatible with autism. The analysis of testicular morphometric alterations was performed based on the analysis of the morphometry of the seminiferous tubules, volumetric density, and volume of the tubular components, percentage and volume of the intertubule components, and stereological and morphometric parameters of the Leydig cells. Prenatal exposure to VPA generated an increase in testicular size, diameter, volume, and length of seminiferous tubules, lumen diameter, tubulosomatic index, somatic epithelial index, as well as increased volume of the nucleus, the cytoplasm of Leydig cells, and levels of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GST). On the other hand, exposure to VPA reduced the height and volumetric density of the epithelium, as well as decreased serum testosterone levels. Treatment with CBD nanoemulsions was effective in reversing behavioral changes compatible with autism, reducing neuronal death in the hippocampus, improving testicular parameters, and attenuating the reduction in testosterone levels generated by prenatal exposure to valproic acid. However, the formulations did not change SOD and GST levels, as the increase in enzyme activity may not have been necessary due to probable prevention against tissue damage generated by CBD.
